The weather has very quickly turned Autumnal as the Summer slips away! It is this time of the year that you have to start considering the ground condition more when out on the course. The greens and approaches are much softer which means you have to really visualise and think about what you need your ball to do. A shot played with a lofted club when the greens are firm and fast will check and feed out slowly, this is really useful in those dry summer conditions. However, when the ground becomes softer the spin will hurt you and the ball will stick in the softer greens. Use less loft, particularly in to up slopes to help the ball move forward. This is the skill I talk about a lot...having the ability to predict what will happen to the ball before it happens rather than waiting for it to happen and then being surprised! Try and play different scenario's in your mind, ask yourself "if I land it there with x club, what will it do...if I land it there, what will it do". By asking yourself questions you will start to give yourself the correct answers. Also learn to reflect rather than just getting frustrated at the outcome. If it doesn't go as close as you would like, ask what could I have done differently? This is how you improve so much quicker, by learning from mistakes and improving your thinking for next time. With the winter approaching, now is a good to time to work on your game, my 3 Releases: Online Short Game School has expanded on everything from my book and includes everything I discuss at my Short Game School. This is such a comprehensive resource which allows you to work on all elements of your short game at home and on the course to really sharpen your short game up for next season.

August, 2024
Wednesday 14th August was the inaugural DG Invitational Event at Woburn Golf Club. Great fun with some really good golf played. The Duke's course was in superb condition and the food/hospitality equally impressive.
Dan spent the afternoon coaching seven time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry.
New video over on Dan's Youtube channel of his lesson with James Milner.

Well, another year of Major’s have gone by! The Open Championship was enthralling with the weather playing a big part. The Saturday, with the cold wind and rain made the course play so difficult with the ball not travelling far. Players were having to use 3 woods on Par-3’s and some couldn’t reach the fairway on Par-4’s! I often find amateur golfers do not appreciate how much conditions do dictate how the ball behaves and how much distance playing in cold, damp weather does take off. Equally in short game, I often get asked how do you play that low spinning shot that checks up by the hole! I’m not sure this shot will actually help you shoot lower scores but it does look good! However, any grass or moisture between blade and ball will always reduce spin, the lie, the moisture and the wind should always be the first things you look at before selecting the club and shot to play. I can’t emphasise how important this Golf IQ side of things is and why I am doing all I can to raise the level of thinking of all golfers. Talking of Golf IQ, I filmed a short game video with Ian Poulter recently, which is now out on my YouTube channel. Speaking with Ian, who has been one of the best players in the world for so long, just shows how incredibly intelligent these top players are around the greens. He discusses so much about the lie, playing from different grass types and how it affects the bounce and run out. I think you will take a lot from this video both from a technical and mental standpoint. Finally, as the weather is warming up and the courses are getting firmer and faster, shot and club choice around the greens becomes more important. When the greens are soft and slow, less loft and more ball speed is important. When they get quicker, consider using more loft and playing a Release-1 with that club. You will notice more check on the ball with the 1st and 2nd bounce before the ball softly runs out. Enjoy your golf, best, Dan
